Here in the next few weeks, if this Houston weather will decide what it wants to do, I'm going to get Trey out for his 6 year old pics...this quick 10 minute session was on our way to church Saturday evening, and we just pulled over in a field that had some awesome light. I am loving Trey's Superman shirt that he got from his Mimi for his birthday...it cracks me up. Oh, and don't worry that Trey and Em are 2 and a half years apart in age...pretty sure the little miss is going to out grow him one of these days!

We've made it thru the Christmas crazies and I'm happy to say we survived to tell about it. :) One of these days I'll have some pictures of my family to show you...Trey is turning 6 in a week, dear Lord how did that happen? Anyhow, to celebrate the new year and Valentine's I am offering some mini sessions. Head's up to a few things...(1) Prices for regular sessions/packages will be increasing by March 1st, 2012, and (2) these will be the last mini sessions until summer time. I'm going to throw this out there and then let is soak in for a second...Owens' Originals Photography pricing will be increasing in the coming year. Money is never an easy topic to discuss, heck...even I hate talking about it, just ask Joe.

With the increase in pricing, there will also be some new features so don't run away just yet. I'll get to those in a minute.

Lets discuss, shall we? I think it's important to say this, "Photography is an art". It's timeless. It's something that you will have in your family for ages and ages. I take great pride in knowing that you picked me to capture those memories for you. I want you to see your pictures and for a moment be taken aback by them. That is my goal and what I pray for before every session. In the last two and a half years, my photography style has changed and I think improved for the better. If you're looking for pictures that are 'matchy matchy', 'posey posey' {sorry my vocab is lacking today}, I may not be that photographer for you. It's taken me two and half years to realize that I'm okay with that. That doesn't mean we can't be friends. :) If you enjoy some of those 'in the moment' shots, I just might be your photographer. Yes, I still enjoy taking the family shots where everyone is looking, you'll definitely get those...but one of my favorite times of a session is catching the 'on the fly' shots.

I've upgraded equipment and that my friends is a never ending cycle. I started offering prints over a year ago and kicked myself for not starting that sooner. Oh, how I get excited every time my packages arrive with your prints. Will I still offer the disc? Absolutely. I'm going to add a package that is your session and just the digital collection of your images. Here's my thoughts on that, though...what, you didn't ask for my opinion? I'm talkative today, I'll give it to you any way. One of my greatest fears for my clients is that they won't fully enjoy their photographs. Raise your hand if you've gotten the disc from a session {from me or someone else} and then that disc sits in your desk drawer. Scarier yet, keep me in the dark if you've done this, you've gone to Wally World or Walgreens to print your images. My job is to educate you on what products to purchase, and I think I need to do a better job at that {stay tuned for improvements}. You would seriously cringe if I showed you a comparison of prints from 'those labs' and prints from the lab I use. I don't want to rip off any other photographers images, but if you Google 'print lab comparisons', there are some good examples out there.

It's also important for y'all to know me. I'm a full time high school teacher, a photographer, a wife {a coach's wife at that}, a mother to 2 very active kiddos, a daughter, a sister, an active church member, and a friend. I am not complaining {at all}, just letting you guys know that I wear a lot of hats. When I started teaching 9 years ago, I coached volleyball {I played thru college and is still my favorite sport}. Lots of family and friends have asked me if I will ever go back to coaching. Never. People say, "never say never"...but, you see, photography has taken over my passion. It's no longer volleyball, it's photographing families, seniors, newborns, brides, etc.

My time with my family members and most of all my kids, is important. For a couple of years now, I have underestimated the value of my time {some would say severely}. From the time you and I start communicating about your session, to the session, to the uploading/editing of your session, and the prep time to finalize your order...I've easily spent 10 hours invested in just your session. I think the studio photography industry makes that hard to believe. When Trey was little, I could walk into JcPenney {yikes} and walk out with images in hand. However, with the evolution of boutique photography, you get a much more personalized session and a better image of what your family is really like. That, to me, is priceless. I've gotten countless e-mails asking me about my pricing over the last couple of years. I've been fortunate to not have any ugly comments, but I've gotten LOTS of non-replies after the pricing sheet is sent out. In the very beginning, not gonna lie, it kind of hurt my feelings. Thankfully, I have a fabulous husband and family that believe in me and my talent and they've helped me to grow thick skin. From here on out, I'll be photographing people that want me and my talent and want to invest in me as an artist. {Please don't take that as conceited, just as someone that's finally grown professionally to realize their worth...does that make sense?}

The price increases will not be astronomical, the session fee will remain the same, but the packages and what they come with will change. Drum roll please, after some Facebook feedback, I will be offering in-person ordering sessions. Gone will be the day that I send you the link to your slideshow, you watch it countless times, and then stumble through what you want and where it's going to go. I will bring the slideshow to you, we'll watch it, we'll measure if you're wanting a custom canvas/standout/frame/whatever, and you'll be guided along the way! If that's not for you, don't run for the hills...we can work something out. :)

Over the Holidays, I'm also going to be adding some custom framing options. They're VERY cool, and I can't wait to unveil those.

If you would like to book and pay for a session before the end of the year {ie January 1, 2012}, I will honor the current package prices.

It is my hope and my prayer that this does not come off as offensive, but words that will help you decide if I am the photographer for you and your family.

Repeat clients, they make the world go 'round. Brenner will be 3 in November, and this was our 3rd shoot together. Mom warned me that smiles might be hard to come by this time around...after about 20 minutes, Brenner was good to go! He turned it on, and became quite the ham. I'm pretty sure he got to have ice cream for dinner! :) This was also my first time meeting little miss Audrey...so cute! Adrienne, thank you for letting me watch y'all grow as a family. I had the pleasure of meeting a new family last night. That is always such a compliment {to me anyways} when someone contacts me that I've never met. We do have a sweet friend in common {Preston's mom} and we live really close to each other. We had a great time last night, minus being chewed up by mosquitoes. Dear Mother Nature, I'll take a high of 70 with sunshine and no rain....and no mosquitoes...thanks! :) Jennifer, I hope you enjoy these as much as I enjoyed taking them!

Hands . I Heart Faces

Shane, her husband, was on a two week stay at home for the birth of their son. I seriously started crying while I was editing this picture. What to Wear - 2011 Fall Edition

One of the most asked questions this time of year is, "Kristy, what should we wear for our pictures?!" I always try to have some up-to-date What to Wear images to give y'all some ideas! One thing I like to stay away from is 'matchy matchy'. Same color scheme, yes...same exact colors for shirts, not so much. Why? If we're all wearing a white or black shirt and we huddle up to take a picture, it gets hard to determine where one person starts and the other stops. Add light layers, cute accessories, and a few punches of a bright color to break it up. I'm definitely not the most fashion forward girl on the block, but I can easily tell someone else what to wear...I'm bossy like that. :)

In no way is this something for you to follow exactly, just a good guide on how to break up different color schemes. Need ideas for some other great colors? Look for Grey/Yellow, Jewel Tone colors, pull colors out of a plaid shirt, and the list goes on!

Saturday, Tory and Amy were married in one of the sweetest wedding ceremonies I've ever been a part of. They were married in the back yard of a dear friend's lake house, and it provided the perfect setting. I've known Amy since she was a little 'squirt' {one of her nicknames} and it's been so fun to see her accomplish so much, and find the man of her dreams.

I haven't photographed many weddings, but this was just perfect for me. Not too big, it was outdoors, we had perfect fall lighting, and I was surrounded by many of my friends in attendance! Tory and Amy were so laid back, and let me do my thing which always helps. Tory and Amy, best of luck in the journey ahead...come back and visit us soon!!

Well, hello photo blog. My apologies for neglecting you! You see, this little photo business is blossoming and with a full time teaching job you have gotten neglected. I'm going to try and fix that! The Marks' family is going to kick off 'Welcome Back to the Blog'!

There really aren't words to describe this family. Shannon {Lane's mommy}, is one of my sister's. I have LOTS of family, not all blood, but that doesn't matter! We spend Holidays together, we text almost every day, we know deep dark secrets, you name it. A little over a year ago, Shannon and Shane got married. Within one month, Shane shipped off to Korea with the Army. He got to come home for 20 days when Lane was born in May {remember this?}, and then had to go back when Lane was just a couple of weeks old. Friday evening, Shane came home and this morning they rolled out bright and early for Fort Lewis in Washington. We met last night for one last photo shoot. We then headed over to Brother's Pizza, and bawled our eyes out when it was time to leave. I'm losing my walking partner, my sushi date, my pool buddy, and a sister...but, Shannon is starting the best adventure that any of us could have ever prayed for. She has the man of her dreams, and the sweetest baby. She is learning the ropes of being a military wife, and I can't wait to see what awesome things God provides for the Marks family!

2011 Holiday Sessions!

September is here! That means it is time to start booking your fabulous Holiday sessions! The 100 degree weather finally broke this weekend, and hopefully it stays that way! Ethan is our nephew, so the last time we were up in Dallas we headed out to take his senior pictures. It's so hard to believe that when Joe and I met, Ethan was all of 6 or 7 years old...and now he's going to be graduating?! How is that possible? Miles was 4 pounds of pure sweetness. He was absolutely perfect for his session, and I just couldn't get over how little he was. So far, he holds the record for my smallest newborn, but also for one of the best...I don't know that I heard him make a peep?! Such a great time catching up with mom, and making new memories of their little miracle.

There comes a time, as a photographer, where you have a shoot that just doesn't go your way. Our shoot with this great family was just that a few months ago...rescheduled once for weather, and then because of our schedules we knew we had to pull the trigger on our 2nd date...however, Mother Nature woke up cranky and gave us the gloomiest/windiest day of the year. We got some shots, but they weren't fabulous. I left wanting more...so, 2 months later, that's what we got! :) The B family means so much to us, as they have walked the 'coaching family' journey with us, introduced us to our church, and are just all around great people.

Let me start out by saying Daylan's reputation proceeds him...in some situations that might make you nervous, but not this one. Daylan is AMAZING, and anyone you come across that knows him, will tell you the same thing. He loves God, he is an amazing athlete, and just an all around great guy! I think it's because he's got 2 great parents! Daylan's photo shoot was a family affair that wrapped up with us closing down Spring Creek BBQ...so much fun! Oh, little Lane. Lane is my 'might-as-well-be' nephew. While his mommy and daddy are not blood relatives, they are family. Lane's daddy, Shane, is serving our country in the U.S. Army...and we couldn't be prouder. He is currently in training in Korea, and will leave this Friday to return for 4 months before they find out where they will be stationed. I got to be at the hospital for Lane's arrival, and it was such a beautiful day...

Mr. Lane is a true miracle. Sunday afternoon we spent a couple hours capturing some memories for daddy to take back to Korea with him. This boy is beautiful...only a mom knows that boys can be called beautiful. Lane is perfect in every way, and I can't wait to watch him grow up! {Hopefully on this side of the ocean} ;) Beware, picture overload...

I am so thankful to my principal for introducing me to this extraordinary young lady. We met at prom last week, while my principal was telling me her story. Y'all...I can't do it justice. Farishta is from Afghanistan, and has been in Texas for 11 years. Every student should listen to her when she tells how she got here. She wrote an essay that I'm looking forward to reading. Mr. Garcia {my principal} tells me that it brought tears to his eyes...which means, I'll most likely be a bumbling mess. This was a first for me, and I hope it's not a last. Enjoy.

Meet Adriana. She may only be 4'11" but don't let that fool you. I get the pleasure of teaching Adriana {AD, as we like to call her} everyday...and her personality is not small! She is tons of fun, but a beautiful, down to earth young lady. If only I could have a class full of AD's. Collin is lucky enough to get to sit by AD...she keeps him in line! We had a good time last night, wondering around Tomball and even knocking on someone's door to use their property...it paid off, because those are my favorites! See?!

I may or may not have been shaking like a little baby...oh, and it was a bunny rabbit.

We finished up with AD in her prom dress. The light was beautiful! I am hanging on to those to surprise AD...probably because she won't think they looked very good. Why you might ask? Seniors, take note...don't eat something off of a taco truck before your shoot...it will come back to haunt you. Just ask AD. Sorry, AD...the story had to be told! :) I'm off to go get a barf bag for AD's desk...I told her she wouldn't get to live it down.

This family is such a special family to us. When your spouse is a high school football coach, you learn very quickly to lean on the other families that are walking that journey with you. Trust me, from July to November/December in a coaching household, you need those relationships. They also introduced us to our church that we have come to LOVE so much. We love the Baumbouree's and I am so glad I got them in front of the camera.

The sweet bunny came along by accident, but I was so glad she did!

Trey is 5 and Emery will be 3 in July. Trey has finally come around and understands when I want to take nice pictures of him, so he complies. Emery on the otherhand...not so much. She is a mess. Full circle. Meet the Penberthy's. The very first family of Owens' Originals Photography. It brings my heart so much joy to see this family grow. Not only was this the very first family I ever photographed, but Tammy is one of my oldest friends. When I say old, I mean kindergarten people...we've known each other since kindergarten!

Hana's mom had the idea to use a baby hammock for this shoot. Unfortunately, I haven't added one to my inventory yet. Insert, Tammy's wonderful mom, and wha la. Yesterday marked my second year of being 'in business'! Time flies, it really does. One thing I've learned is that after the holidays are over, you usually don't start to hear from clients until March, when the pretty flowers start to appear. However, this February has proven to be different, and I am loving it. I absolutely adore capturing these sweet memories for my ~~clients~~ friends! Meet Preston and his sweet mom and dad.

I could go on, and on, and on about Preston's amazing-ness. Yes, I just made up a word for him...because he deserves it. If you don't know about the story of Preston, you can go over to his mom's blog and catch up. The short of it, is that Preston had open heart surgery to save his life less than 3 weeks ago.

Now look at him. Like I said earlier, amazing.

Here's mom and Preston hanging out in his room. This picture doesn't do his nursery justice. It is too precious for words.

This last picture is my new favorite. Maybe of all time. Being at the hospital for his arrival and for following his story, step by step made me hug Trey and Emery tighter each night...to put my phone down or turn the computer off, and just be. For a while now, I've been a 'crier' at church...but now, you may not want to sit next to me. Okay, the picture. Here it is.

Praise God whom ALL blessings flow! Sweet Preston arrived Tuesday, January 4th at 10:11 a.m. I was honored to be present at the hospital to help document P's arrival for Tony and Tiffanie. These are some of my new favorite images, and feel so thankful that I could provide these images for them. Enjoy the slideshow, and keep those prayers coming. Preston made it thru his surgery today, and the doctors are pumped with how well it went. He is not out of the woods, but things are on the up and up! What a testament to God's goodness this little man is!

What to Wear - Fall 2010 Edition

One of the most frequently asked questions by clients is, "What should we wear?!...HELP!" I almost always ask a question back to them..."Do you match your outfits on a daily basis?" My theory is this: I want to capture you and your family in your natural element. Some of the best images of your session will simply be the interactions between you all. Therefore, if you don't match on a daily basis, then why do it in your timeless pictures? It's good to coordinate, just not over do it. Check out the following images to help you decide what might look great this fall.

Notice how the little ones outfit pops, and will add some separation between mom and dad's grey. Also, mom's scarf ties in the bright colors from the little girl's outfit...

Y'all the time is fast approaching. FALL! The temperatures are finally dropping {okay, not too much yet, but still...} October is starting to fill up, and there are only a few dates left. Don't forget that this is not my full time job, so I have to limit myself to a certain number of shoots a week. Wow, I hardly ever share my own personal photographs over here, so I thought I would take the liberty! We headed to Surfside this past weekend for one last hurrah before football season gets underway. I was a little skeptical as to how Emery would do, seeing as how she doesn't like to get her hands or feet dirty. The girl, LOVED it. We found 2 cool looking crabs, and she was all about them. Trey, on the otherhand, would scream like a little girl if they got too close. We had a fabulous time, and now Joe is back on the football field and we are gearing up for school to start. Now for the pictures...

This shoot was one to remember! We didn't melt in late July (in Texas), we made a sno cone pit stop, and we ate at Mel's Country Cafe afterwards...does it get any better? Not in my book! Mom and dad are anxious to meet Mr. Mason, and he couldn't come at a better time...Wildcat football season! :) It will be fun to have a sweet lil baby on our sidelines this fall! Whoa, I think this is the first time I have ever been backed up on my blogging! I'm going to catch up all in one post! I've had a shoot every week, which keeps me on my toes! Especially since football season has started for Joe. Facebook is so nice, as it is a super fast way for me to show everyone their sneak peek. However, I always like to share over here too, so here ya go!

Mother nature had another plan for yesterday, and she tried to rain on our parade again this morning...well, we didn't let her! We got up bright and early, and knocked it out. Mom and I found each other thru the awesome world of blogs...only to realize we went to the same church! You can check out her super cute blog here. I was so overjoyed for them when they found out they were blessed with not 1, but 2 little ones that are due this November! Last night, I packed up the car, we headed out to shoot...only to come across some yucky clouds. The rain held off and we were able to fit in the shoot. Hope you enjoy the sneak peek!

Changes are coming!

Well, friends...the changes start August 1st!

My ultimate goal is to provide you with high quality, lifelong images for your family. In doing so, my costs have crept up on me...which means, unfortunately, my prices have to follow suit. The web site {under The 411} has been updated with these new prices. If you have any questions about the new pricing, please e-mail me!

Along with the pricing changes, I have also tweaked a few of my policies. Starting August 1st, your online galleries will be available for 7 days, once they are posted. You will need to place your prints/package orders in this time frame, or incur a $25 re-posting fee. While that is the main policy change, please note that 8.25% tax will be added to your print order.

Now that all of the 'fun stuff' is out of the way...please stay tuned for a Fall Special that you'll definitely want to take advantage of. Need another way to stay in the know? Follow me on Twitter!!

One last piece of business. Who would have thought that August is the month that professional photographers starting booking up for Christmas pictures?! Add to that, my husband is a Texas high school football coach. Do you see an issue here? BOOK now. This year, I'm afraid there is a possibility where I will have to turn away some shoots, because there simply is not enough time in the day {i.e. full time teacher, wife, mother of 2 preschoolers, and the list goes on}. Don't believe me? I've already booked 2 full sessions for October. I'm just sayin'!

Awesome. That's the only word that comes to mind. We have been planning this shoot for months, when Alex decided he could come to town and rain on our parade. Generally, you can reschedule due to weather. However, when you have 18 people that are never in the same city together...what do you do? You get on all 4's and beg Mother Nature to please cooperate! Remind me to send Mother Nature a thank you card, because she listened!

This is Miss Rachael. The apple of Trey's eye. Miss Rachael was one of Trey's teachers from preschool. We've had to reschedule a couple of times for weather, etc and today the stars finally aligned! I did a rare morning shoot to try and beat the heat...yeah, no. We didn't beat the heat, but we beat the rain! Enjoy the sneak peek!
